Soccer: Maui High grad Scott scores first MLS goal
SEATTLE >> Maui High graduate Zach Scott of Haiku headed in a corner kick from Alex Caskey midway through the 63rd minute for his first Major League Soccer goal as the Seattle Sounders topped the Colorado Rapids on Saturday in Seattle.
"We practice it a lot, trying to find the right spot for swinging in good balls," Scott said. "Caskey put it right in my path. I really didn’t have to do much other than run in the right area and get the tiniest bit of deflection on it and put it away."
Scott is in his fourth season with the Sounders.
Kirby, Patton hurl HPU past Chaminade
Melissa Kirby pitched a six-hitter and Chante Tesoro scored three runs as Hawaii Pacific beat Chaminade 6-1 on Saturday to sweep a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader at Okita Field.
In the first game, Breanne Patton tossed a seven-hitter as HPU beat Chaminade 7-1. Nicole Morrow went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Sea Warriors.
HPU improved to 27-17 and 19-9; Chaminade dropped to 14-25 and 8-18.
QB Club features karate, masters track
Karate champion Shannon Nishi and masters track and field athlete Joan Davis will be the featured speakers at Monday’s weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Nishi, of the International Karate Federation, won the bronze medal in kumite in the 55kg weight class at the 2011 Pan American Games at Guadalajara, Mexico.
Davis is ranked in the top 10 of four events in the April 2012 issue of National Masters News magazine. She is No. 2 in the super weight throw, No. 4 in the pentathlon, No. 6 in the weight throw and No. 9 in the hammer throw.
The Maple Garden restaurant is located at 909 Isenberg St., directly across Old Stadium Park. The event starts at 11:30 a.m. It’s open to the public and lunch is $15.
UH shuts out Utah State in men’s tennis
The University of Hawaii men’s tennis team beat Utah State 7-0 in a Western Athletic Conference match Saturday in Logan, Utah.
It was the Warriors’ first sweep of the season.
Dmytro Kovalyov, Chas Okamoto, Nils Schuhmann, Jared Spiker and Danilo Casanova swept their singles matches. Jonathan Brooklyn defeated Sven Poslusny at No. 1 singles 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.
Hawaii’s Brooklyn/Kovalyov, Charlie Rice/Okamoto and Schuhmann/Casanova won their doubles matches.
HPU splits with Dixie State in baseball
Derek Nakasato went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Max Newman went 3-for-3 as Hawaii Pacific beat Dixie State 6-5 in the first game of a Pacific West Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
The Sea Warriors scored four runs in the sixth inning for a 6-2 lead.
In the seven-inning second game, Josh Mooney pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts and Tyson Littlewood drove in Cedric Johnson in the third inning for the game’s only run as Dixie State beat HPU 1-0. The Sea Warriors’ John Albert pitched a four-hitter.
HPU is 22-15 and 14-13; Dixie State is 23-11 and 19-9.
UH women win 1, lose 1 in water polo
The University of Hawaii women’s water polo team split two matches Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
The No. 16 Rainbow Wahine lost to No. 5 Arizona State 11-6 to finish winless (0-7) in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Amarens Genee scored two goals to lead Hawaii and Serena Reid had nine saves. Annabelle Carter scored four goals for the Sun Devils.
In the second match, Genee scored four goals and Reid made eight saves as Hawaii beat No. 17 Cal Baptist 9-7.
Hawaii is 8-12 overall.
