Tour brings Honolulu of 1941 back to life
A new walking tour offered by Waikiki Trolley will take guests back to wartime Honolulu’s Red Light District in 1941, when the area "was visited by 50,000 servicemen daily, where barefoot shoeshine boys, hula girl photo concession stands, popcorn vendors, shooting galleries, tattoo parlors, burlesque theaters, cafes and four-drink-minimum bars surrounded the district’s infamous brothels," according to a release.
The tour also discusses life under martial law, blackout conditions and rationing.
The 1.5-mile trip makes a loop from Waikiki through downtown and takes about an hour. It runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meeting point is at Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Tickets can be purchased at www.waikikitrolley.com, at activity desks throughout Waikiki, or at Waikiki Trolley desks at Royal Hawaiian Center and Duty Free Shops in Waikiki.
