Radford runner Krixtofer Hughley, a mechanical scoring error and budget cuts had a lot to do with the Rams’ eventual victory in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division track and field meet Saturday night at the Kaiser track.
When the results were tabulated following the meet, the team victory was originally awarded to Mililani with second-place Radford five points behind (100-95).
Radford coaches Sid and Elizabeth Patton, however, reviewed the results and noticed a discrepancy.
Hughley won his 400-meter heat (one of three the OIA runs to determine the top-six scoring finishers) by a wide margin. However, he walked back across the finish line and the timing mechanism recorded him for a slower time and a lower placing than his actual performance.
After a review, OIA officials found that Hughley finished with the third-best time among the runners in the three heats and was awarded six points, which was enough to boost Radford past Mililani by one point (101 to 100), according to Trojans coach Edwin Alfaro.
The OIA used to run trials on the Thursday before the Saturday finals. Due to budget cuts, the OIA did away with the trials, Alfaro said.
