A playground set at Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School, which a school official said was valued at between $10,000 and $25,000, was intentionally set on fire last month, and police say a 14-year-old boy might be the culprit.
Police arrested the teenager Tuesday afternoon after a witness of the March 31 blaze was found.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said the initial alarm was for a brush fire.
However, when firefighters arrived at the school on Kalanianaole Highway just after 10 p.m., they found the playground set in flames.
Seelig said the fire investigators determined the fire was intentionally set.
A slide and other playground equipment, including a padded safety mat under and around the set, also were destroyed.
Noel Richardson, the school’s principal, would not discuss specifics of the case because of the continuing investigation.
He said the playground set is one of two at the Windward Oahu campus and is about 8 years old.
Richardson said he did not know if any of the remaining pieces can be salvaged and reused.
The teenager was booked on suspicion of third-degree arson, a class C felony for property damage worth more than $500. He was released pending investigation.
