Hawaii and Brigham Young took turns snapping their respective winning streaks in splitting a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader in Provo, Utah, on Saturday.
UH senior Stephanie Ricketts threw a one-hitter and the No. 15/19 Wahine ended BYU’s 29-game home winning streak with a 1-0 victory in the opener.
The Cougars bounced back by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game on their way to a 7-3 win to end UH’s seven-game win streak.
The split capped a 6-1 road trip for the Wahine (32-4, 6-2 WAC), who return to Honolulu today in second place in the WAC.
“Not many teams do the 13-day road trips to face the defending WAC champs (New Mexico State) and then go into the back yard of a (29)-game winning streak and go to a Pac-12 school (Utah) to play,” UH head coach Bob Coolen said. “Kudos to the girls. I tried to emphasize that to the team.”
UH trails Fresno State by a game in the standings and hosts third-place Louisiana Tech (18-19, 5-3) starting Friday in its next-to-last home series of the regular season.
Coolen said the wear of the trip finally hit in Saturday’s second game and “hopefully the week will rejuvenate them sleeping in their own beds and we’ll be good to go against LaTech,” Coolen said.
After Friday’s scheduled series opener was snowed out, the weather in Provo warmed up on Saturday, but Ricketts and BYU junior Hanna Howell kept the bats cool in allowing just three hits between them.
The Wahine scored the game’s lone run without the benefit of a hit in the top of the sixth inning. Kelly Majam and Kayla Wartner walked to lead off the inning and advanced on Sarah Robinson’s flyout.
After the Cougars intentionally walked Jessica Iwata, Howell bobbled Alex Aguirre’s ground ball and had to make the play to first, allowing Majam to score.
Ricketts (20-2) then completed her eighth shutout of the season and the 31st of her career, finishing with five strikeouts and three walks, and ended the nation’s second-longest home winning streak.
“Steph was on her game again,” Coolen said. “She brings her ‘A’ game every single time she toes the rubber this year and she’s hard to beat. “
UH struck first in the second game to take a 1-0 lead, but the Cougars (24-11, 4-3) strung together six hits in a six-run bottom of the first off junior Kaia Parnaby (12-2), who entered the game with a 0.74 earned-run average. Campbell graduate Katie Manuma gave BYU the lead with a two-run single.
BYU added a run in the third, and pitcher Tori Almond held UH down until Iwata hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
Prior to BYU’s six-run first, UH had given up no more than four runs in a game this season.
