Ten-foot shark bites North Shore surfer’s foot; warnings posted
A 28-year-old, male surfer was bitten on the left foot by an apparently 10-foot shark on Oahu’s North Shore this afternoon, and lifeguards are warning people to stay out of the water.
The man was bit at 12:38 p.m. while surfing at the surf spot known as Leftovers, said Jim Howe, operations chief for Honolulu’s ocean safety division.
"It came up and got him and let him go, then came up and got him a second time," Howe said. "He fought it off with his board and got a good look at it."
The surfer did not appear to suffer major damage to his foot, Howe said.
Paramedics treated him for minor injuries and transported him in stable condition to Wahiawa General Hospital.
Lifeguards set up a command post and are issuing shark warnings for Ali’i, Chun’s Reef Support Park, Ehukai, Hale’iwa, Ke’Waena, Laniakea Beach Support Park, Sunset and Waimea Bay, Howe said.
