Waianae man, 28, dies after Maili rescue
One of two men taken to the hospital in critical condition in separate near-drowning incidents has died.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that a 28-year-old Waianae man, rescued Sunday afternoon from Maili Beach by city lifeguards, died at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center. The office identified him as Paul Sosefo.
Lifeguards said they saw Sosefo treading water and floating on his back just before 4 p.m. Sunday but noticed he was face down when they checked on him later.
They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived and took him to the health center.
Fire rescue crews and paramedics also took a man in his 60s in critical condition to an area hospital after he was found floating in a tide pool off the Makaha shoreline at 1 p.m. Sunday.
No update was immediately available on his condition.
Police arrest suspect in theft of vehicle
Police have arrested a man who allegedly attempted to run over an officer Wednesday near Chinatown.
The man, 31, who had no local address, was arrested outside a Keeaumoku Street condominium at about 9 a.m. Monday. He is being held pending charges of attempted murder and driving a stolen vehicle.
At 11:24 a.m. Wednesday police stopped a green Jeep Cherokee at Vineyard Boulevard and Aala Street that had been reported stolen. When the woman driving the vehicle was ordered out, the man in the passenger seat jumped into the driver’s seat and sped away on Vineyard, police said, nearly striking an officer, police said.
The woman, 36, of a Papakolea address, was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle and driving without a license.
Girl and father hurt in fall from Hana cliff
A 45-year-old man and his 7-year-old daughter were injured after falling off a cliff in Hana on Monday afternoon.
A fire official said the girl had head injuries and her father suffered leg injuries after falling 30 to 40 feet at Red Sand Beach at about 4:10 p.m.. The injuries were not considered life-threatening, a Maui County spokesman said.
A Fire Department helicopter airlifted the girl at 4:45 p.m. and brought out her father 15 minutes later. They were brought to a Hana park and flown separately to a hospital.
Argument ends in Makiki man’s arrest
A 26-year-old Makiki man allegedly broke into his neighbor’s apartment and was arrested when he returned to the scene Sunday and got into an argument with the homeowner.
Police said the suspect allegedly broke the window of a Makiki apartment around 6:40 a.m. Sunday, but two people who live there confronted him after he entered the apartment. The suspect escaped through the broken window.
At 11:40 p.m. Sunday police responded to an argument at the same address and arrested the suspect for unauthorized entry and first-degree criminal property damage.
Kamehameha Schools students evacuated
Students from Kamehameha elementary and middle schools were evacuated for about an hour Monday morning after workers at the middle school campus broke a gas line. No injuries were reported.
A contractor was doing excavation work at 8 a.m. when the gas line broke. The line was repaired at 8:45 a.m.
