12 worker dogs perish in blaze at Maui kennel
Maui fire officials said a fire that killed seven adult dogs and five puppies in a kennel in Wailuku on Sunday was intentionally set.
The fire broke out at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday on Moolu Road between Waiolani and Kuikahi streets.
Police said it appeared the fire began in a 12-by-8-foot storage shed attached to the kennel. The shed had no power source, police said.
The estimated losses totaled $2,000 to the building and $12,000 to the contents, including the dogs, Maui County spokesman Lee Mainaga said.
Mainaga said the dogs were used for hunting and herding. The dogs were of mixed breed, police said.
Maui Humane Society CEO Jocelyn Bouchard told the Maui News it’s horrible someone would target the dogs. She said the society will investigate the incident.
The cost of the blaze has been put at $12,000 for the loss of the dogs and $2,000 for the kennel.
Mainaga said authorities have no suspects in the case.
Police asked that anyone with information on this incident call the Maui Police Department at 244-6400 or CrimeStoppers at 242-6966.
