3 schools receive donations from bank
Three Oahu schools have received more than $50,000 each from American Savings Bank. They are Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Pearl City, Kamiloiki Elementary and Saint Louis School.
Customers who opened an account last fall could designate a school for a donation of up to $40 from the bank. Schools that received the most designations in their size category got another $50,000.
Bank President Richard Wacker presented a check for $51,450 to Cindy Olaso, principal of the Pearl City school, on March 8.
Olaso and her librarian recently spent 24 hours on the school roof to fulfill their end of a reading challenge; 248 students read more than 9,500 books in three months.
Blaze burns a second day
Maui firefighters had a stubborn, 20-acre brush fire 75 percent contained Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The fire off Stable Road near Kahului Airport was reported Saturday morning. The cause was undetermined.
One person was evacuated Saturday, and some structures sustained roof damage from flying embers.
Courthouse site picked in Kona
KAILUA-KONA » A site has been selected for a new Kona Judiciary complex.
Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald has selected a 10-acre state-owned parcel across the street from the West Hawaii Civic Center.
The complex will house seven full-time judges and 220 employees and will be built in anticipation of the needs of West Hawaii’s growing population.
Preliminary plans call for the construction of a 142,000-square-foot facility to begin in 2014 and be completed in 2017.
Hula workshops planned for Hilo
The ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo will present four days of hula-related workshops and demonstrations April 10-13 during the Merrie Monarch Festival.
On April 10 at 10 a.m., students of Nawahiokalaniopuu School will present "Puna Lei Onaona," a hula that takes the audience on a journey through Puna via mele, hula and Hawaiian-language stories. At 12:30 p.m. the senior class will talk and sing about sailing from Oahu to Hawaii island in 2011.
