1 man dies, 1 in critical condition after near-drownings
One of two men taken to the hospital in critical condition in separate near-drowing incidents has died.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that a 28-year-old Waianae man, rescued Sunday afternoon from Maili Beach by city lifeguards, died at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Paul Sosefo. An autopsy will be conducted today to determine cause of death.
Lifeguards said they saw Sosefo treading water and floating on his back just before 4 p.m. Sunday but noticed him face down in the water when they checked on him later.
They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived and took him to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.
Honolulu Fire Department rescue crews and paramedics also took a man in his 60s in critical condition to an area hospital after he was found floating in a tidepool off the Makaha shoreline at 1 p.m. Sunday.
