McGuire, Kamehameha rally past Saint Louis
Saint Louis’ Shayne Kurihara slid in ahead of the tag from Kamehameha’s Tyler Meditz in the bottom of the third inning of Saturday’s ILH baseball game. The Warriors fell behind, but came back to beat the Crusaders.

Saint Louis baseball coach George Gusman usually savors seeing his former players enjoy success.
Saturday was one of the exceptions.
Gusman was the junior varsity coach at Kamehameha when the current Warriors seniors broke into the program as freshmen. Kamehameha shortstop Alika McGuire was part of that group and delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the Warriors’ 5-4 win over the Crusaders at Central Oahu Regional Park.
“Alika played for me. He’s a good kid, just wished he would have done it against somebody else,” Gusman said, “but my hat’s off to him.”
McGuire’s two-out double into the left-center gap highlighted a five-run Kamehameha rally in the fifth inning as the Warriors came back from a 4-0 deficit to improve to 7-2 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu race.
“Since we don’t have an ILH tournament at the end of the year, every game is a big game,” Kamehameha coach Vern Ramie said. “So I’m real proud of our guys. They battled back against a real tough Saint Louis team.”

The Warriors rolled to an 8-2 win over Saint Louis — which returned just one starter this season — on Tuesday. But the Warriors fell behind early in the rematch as the Crusaders (3-5) scored three runs in the third inning with the aid of two Kamehameha errors and pushed the lead to four runs in the fourth on Rayson Romero’s sacrifice fly.
Saint Louis right-hander Rico Garcia finished with seven strikeouts and was in command through four innings before running into trouble when Kamehameha loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth.
Garcia got a strikeout and got ahead of pinch hitter Damien Toriki. After a wild pitch brought in the Warriors’ first run, Toriki worked the count full, then lined an RBI single to right to close the gap to 4-2.
“Especially to come off the bench and have an at-bat like that, that’s huge,” Ramie said.
After another strikeout, Hoku Botelho singled to left to drive in William Young. McGuire then gave the Warriors the lead with his drive into the gap.
“We started off with the first guys getting on base, that was key,” McGuire said. “I just dug down, (the count) was 2-2 with two out and I had a to hit a big one and I got the pitch I wanted.”
Kamehameha sophomore left-hander Keenan Lum then protected the lead on his way to a complete-game win. Saint Louis put the tying run on second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Lum got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
“Keenan hung in there. It wasn’t his best game, but he showed his tenacity and kept throwing strikes,” Ramie said.
“He threw a lot of innings last year for us in the second half of the year. He may be a sophomore academically, but in baseball years he’s a veteran.”
