At times they looked young as pups, but the rest of the night, the Kalaheo Mustangs looked like champs.
Nainoa Frank and Jordyn Reindollar each put down six kills as the sixth-ranked Mustangs swept upset-minded Kaiser 25-17, 25-18 Thursday night at the Cougars’ gym.
Kalaheo, which swept Farrington earlier, improved to 10-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East despite occasional flurries of errors. That’s not unexpected of a team with just one senior.
Junior Reeve Troberg added five kills, and junior setter Silila Tucker dished out 19 assists in Kalaheo’s balanced attack.
"We played with momentum the second set," Frank said. "First set, we had critical errors. We fired from all cylinders with Jordyn (Reindollar), with Reeve. We’re improving. We just need to stay focused and get the next one. We’re still working on it. If we take care of our errors, we can be up there, states-wise."
The defensive wall up front, led by the 6-foot-6 Frank, limited Kaiser to a .147 hitting percentage.
"Right now, we’re pretty balanced on offense. Everybody gets their chance to contribute. When they do, they keep that fire lit," Kalaheo coach Edwin Chun said. "Nainoa gets a lot of the dirty balls. He’s our opposite for a reason. He does good work with the good sets, the bad sets. Whatever set he gets, he makes it difficult for the other team."
The visitors also drilled eight aces, including three each by Troberg and Frank.
Troberg’s aces broke open a close battle in the first set, sparking a 7-0 run to open a 20-13 lead.
"We worked through our errors. We had a lot of serving errors, ball-control stuff, but we came through against a solid team, so I’m proud of them," Chun added.
Kaiser regrouped and capitalized on Kalaheo’s errors, which included a number of net violations. The Cougars led 13-12 before Frank spanked a kill from the right side — his normal spot. He then rained three aces in a row at the right corner as Kalaheo dominated the rest of the way.
"You have to do some things real well against them," Kaiser coach Jon Stanley said. "It starts with passing, otherwise you’re going eyeball-to-eyeball with them and that’s a pretty big block."
The Mustangs showed no fatigue from last week’s marathon series of matches in league and Hawaii Invitational Tournament play. Chun rewarded his team with a pizza party on Monday, and after a light workout on Tuesday, they got back to the usual routine by Wednesday.
"That tournament is always brutal for a volleyball player, very demanding of the body," Chun said. "As much as possible, we tried to keep the body intact during the week."
Kalaheo didn’t get a full team together until the basketball season ended, giving Chun and his staff basically one week of preseason.
"That was the biggest middle we’ve faced on the East side," Chun said of Kaiser’s 6-5 Billy McGivern. "We had to make sure he wasn’t a threat. We knew he was a strength."
Earlier, Kalaheo was nearly pushed to three sets, but swept Farrington 25-13, 27-26. Frank had five kills to pace the Mustangs.
Tucker had 20 assists and two kills. Troberg added three kills.
Kalaheo committed eight service errors and five hitting errors in the second set.
In the opening match, junior Casey Bolda’s seven kills led Kaiser over Farrington 25-11, 25-22. Issa Anderson, a senior opposite, added five kills, while junior middles Garrett Gagne and Joe Hoddick chipped in four each.
