Ching siblings have stellar week

Honolulu brother-sister combination Alex and Alina Ching ran up a couple runner-up collegiate golf finishes the past two days.

Tuesday, at the University of Hawaii’s Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Kapalua Bay, Alina finished four shots back of medalist Daniela Holmqvist of Cal. Ching, a Punahou graduate and a freshman at Pepperdine, shot 77—218.

Colorado, No. 11 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, won the tournament with an 889 total, two shots better than eighth-ranked Cal. The Rainbow Wahine (955) finished 11th and UH-Hilo was last in the 14-team event. Maui’s Cassy Isagawa (71—223), a freshman at Oregon and former state high school champion, finished eighth.

Alex Ching, a senior at San Diego and also a former state high school champ, closed with a 71 Wednesday in the final round of the 2012 Desert Shootout, in Goodyear, Ariz. He finished a stroke behind Wichita State’s Rafael Becker, who shot 66—202.

Ching is ranked 52nd nationally.

Baldwin graduate Justin Keiley, a sophomore at Brigham Young, entered the final round tied for first with Ching and shot 75 to take third.
