City publishes May Day lei contest rules
May Day lei contest rules are now available from the city Department of Parks and Recreation.
The 85th annual lei day celebration at Kapiolani Park on May 1 offers separate contests for Hawaiian lei, youth lei and lei lipine (ribbon, fabric and yarn lei).
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Lei U‘i Onaona,”which means “Sweet Lei of Youth.” Theme lei, which fall under the Hawaiian lei division, are to be made from pikake and/or pakalana.
The deadline to submit lei lipine entries is April 21 at the Makiki District Park parking lot, 1527 Keeaumoku St. Other lei, which must be accompanied by a completed entry form, can be submitted to the lei receiving booth at Kapiolani Park from 7:30 to 9 a.m. May 1.
To download a copy of the contest rules or find a schedule of lei-making workshops, which start Saturday, visit www.honoluluparks.com or call 768-3041.
