PAGO PAGO, American Samoa » A federal investigation has found that 481 employees at American Samoa’s only hospital are owed more than $628,000 in back wages.

The U.S. Department of Labor said Wednesday an investigation into LBJ Tropical Medical Center in Pago Pago found overtime, minimum wage and record-keeping violations of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.

The investigation found employees weren’t paid for overtime and minimum wages for hours worked outside scheduled shifts. Affected employees include nurses, housekeepers and food service assistants.

The government-owned hospital is one of the territory’s largest employers, with about 680 employees.

Hospital officials couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

Minimum wage for government sector employees in American Samoa is currently $4.41 per hour, plus time and one-half for hours worked beyond a 40 per week.
