The rest of Maryknoll’s tough softball schedule looks a lot less imposing now.
The Spartans, who are in the middle of a stretch of nine games in 12 days, got a signature win when they beat No. 2 Punahou 3-0 at Sand Island on Monday.
Maryknoll came into the game 1-6 and had suffered a 10-3 loss to the Buffanblu on Thursday, but four of their losses had been by one run. That gave them reason to believe that things might be very different on their home field on Monday.
“They came in here saying ‘I can, I can, I can,’ ” Maryknoll coach John Uekawa said. “They were saying it the whole game. All of our losses have been so close, it’s about time. It’s just about time, I am so happy for these girls.”
Freshman Shearyna Labasan threw a shutout, and Carolann Toyama drove in a run with a single through the middle with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Labasan got thumped by Punahou on Thursday but made up for it by settling down and not overthrowing, according to her coach. She said she didn’t pitch any differently, that the team behind her made the difference.
Labasan and Punahou’s Jaci Young traded zeroes for the first 5 innings, with each pitcher punching out four batters. Labasan’s biggest out came in the fourth inning, when she caught sophomore Shelbie Fujinaga looking with runners on first and second. She stranded runners in every inning but the second, but that was the only inning she left more than one on base.
“She just pitched a good game,” Punahou coach Bob Makahilahila said. “She had our batters a little bit off balance and we started pressing a little bit. It’s not like a surprise, they are a good team and it is unfortunate they picked us to come back on.”
Maryknoll broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Labasan singled to center field with one out, and Erica Inagaki reached when Punahou third baseman Kylie Popovich flubbed her attempt at a sacrifice. Brianna Guro, Maryknoll’s No. 3 hitter, tried to sacrifice next but popped out to the pitcher for the second out.
Toyama then strode to the plate and rapped the first pitch she saw back through the box to score Labasan.
“I was so nervous, but the coaches told me to relax,” Toyama said. “I figured she was coming with a strike so I was looking for the first one.”
Inagaki and Toyama scored later in the inning on a single by Mieki Okimura that got past Punahou center fielder Kaylin Okuma for the Buffanblu’s second error.
Labasan allowed a single by Thalan Masada in the bottom of the seventh but got Reina Furuya to fly out to left field to end it.
