Tyler Olson held Hawaii’s baseball team at bay for seven solid innings, allowing only one run in Gonzaga’s 4-1 victory on Friday at Washington Trust Field in Spokane, Wash.
After leaving for the mainland on Monday, Hawaii (14-8) finally played its first road game of the season four days later, after one game was canceled and another postponed.
"Honestly, it was a good baseball game," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "There’s no question one run is not going to get it done, but I thought we swung the bats pretty well overall."
Marco Gonzales went 3-for-4 with a home run and Olson (3-0) gave up one run on eight hits in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts to earn the win for the Zags (13-6).
Pi‘ikea Kitamura had three of Hawaii’s nine hits, and Cody Clark doubled to score Kaeo Aliviado in the seventh for UH’s only run.
By then, Gonzaga had taken a 4-0 lead, scoring four times off Hawaii starter Matt Sisto, who dropped to 4-2 for the season.
Sisto matched a season high with 10 hits allowed, striking out one. He also walked a batter to end a streak of 33 innings without allowing a free pass.
"(Gonzaga) is a very aggressive club and they came out swinging the bats and, really, of all the hits they got off Sisto, he only made a couple of bad pitches," Trapasso said.
Kitamura had his team-leading ninth multi-hit game of the season, but the Rainbows left eight men on base.
Breland Almadova added two hits for Hawaii, which was 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
Gonzaga got nearly all of its run production from the top half of its order. The first five hitters in the Zags’ lineup went 9-for-19 with all four runs and three RBIs.
David Bigelow worked the final two innings for Gonzaga, allowing one hit and striking out three to earn his second save.
"I told the team it was one of those games where you do most of the things the right way but you just get beat," Trapasso said.
The series continues with a doubleheader today at 10 a.m. to make up Thursday’s game that was postponed due to weather.
Hawaii will start lefties Jarrett Arakawa (2-1, 1.34 ERA) and Scott Squier (3-1, 2.19) in that order. Both games are scheduled to go nine innings.
