The free event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a welcome by state Sen. Brickwood Galuteria, the organizer, followed by the singing of the national anthem by Jimmy Borges and "Hawaii Pono‘i" by Marlene Sai. The event includes presentations on Medicaid and Medicare, identity theft and long-term insurance.
City officials plan to discuss TheBus
The city has scheduled informational briefings on its plan to improve TheBus and TheHandi-Van service.
The briefings start March 27 in Wahiawa and are scheduled in other areas of the island through April 3.
The meetings will go over a plan intended to support mobility for Oahu riders, reduce traffic congestion and work toward the creation of livable communities. The draft plan and meeting schedule can be found at www1.honolulu.gov/ dts/short-range-transit-plan.htm.
Man drowns while diving
A 54-year-old man drowned while spearfishing with his son Saturday at Anaehoomalu Bay on Hawaii island.
The man’s 10-year-old son said he had been fishing with his father but came back to shore due to problems with his mask. He said he was watching his father and noticed that he did not surface.
Fire rescue personnel were called at 11:45 a.m. and searched the area using divers, a rescue boat and a helicopter. The man’s body was located underwater about 100 yards offshore. Rescuers used a net to retrieve the body and return it to shore.
The man was declared dead at the scene.
KCC students still ride free
A pilot program that allows Kauai Community College students to ride the island’s municipal bus service for free has been extended two months, until mid-May, the county announced last week.
Since the program began in September, students have made an average of 3,436 trips per month on The Kaua‘i Bus, said Ian Ross, a KCC student who is on the mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee.
KCC students can ride the bus for free by showing a student ID.
A memorandum of agreement to extend the program until the end of the semester, May 11, was signed by Kauai County Executive on Transportation Celia Mahikoa and Gary Nitta, KCC vice chancellor for administrative services.
The Kaua‘i Bus offers daily public transportation from Hanalei to Kekaha. For more information, go to www.kauai.gov/transportation or call 241-6410.
