After winning its first three Interscholastic League of Honolulu games with a dominating offense, Mid-Pacific showed off its defense Saturday.
Ivan Dilda allowed only four hits and the Owls shut out Saint Louis 3-0 in a baseball game on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
MPI, which has outscored foes 30-11, improved to 4-0, while the Crusaders dropped to 1-2.
"I don’t know, that’s the first time he has thrown, his first start," Dunn Muramaru said. "He did a good job, kids made some plays behind him."
Dilda didn’t allow his first hit until the fourth inning, only letting one ball escape the infield. One of them was a lazy fly to Ryne Saiki and the other a rare 9-3 putout when right fielder Travis Garcia-Perreira charged a grounder through the hole and threw out Rayson Romero at first base.
"Today, I was throwing a lot of two seams that were breaking downward, so they were hitting a lot of grounders," Dilda said. "It was working, so I just kept throwing it."
It worked so well that Mid-Pacific first baseman Daniel Fentriss made 15 of the Owls’ 21 putouts.
Dilda only had one strikeout, but it squelched Saint Louis’ best chance to score.
With Mid-Pacific clinging to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Shayne Kurihara singled through the middle for the Crusaders’ first hit. Dilda responded to the adversity by hitting the next two batters to load the bases with two outs.
He then struck out Jordan Mopas on three pitches, coaxing him to go fishing on a ball in the dirt.
