Just one more swing.
That’s all Jessica Iwata wanted in the bottom of the 10th inning.
That’s all she needed to send the University of Hawaii softball team to an upset of the nation’s top-ranked team Thursday night.
After Iwata’s bobble in the field allowed No. 1 California to score the go-ahead run in the top of the inning, her two-run home run lifted the Rainbow Wahine to a dramatic 3-1 victory in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

In trying to sum up the rush, all Iwata could come up with was "Amazing."
"You can’t really explain moments like this," the junior said, "and they don’t come very often."
Iwata’s blast capped what had been a scoreless pitchers duel between UH senior Stephanie Ricketts and California junior Jolene Henderson through nine innings. Ricketts struck out 12, walked seven and gave up seven hits in 10 tension-filled frames.
Henderson, last year’s Pac-10 Conference pitcher of the year and the reigning Pac-12 pitcher of the week, struck out 16, walked none and held the Wahine to a single hit going into the 10th.
With the international tiebreaker rule putting a runner on second to start each extra inning, Cal finally scratched out a run when Iwata’s error on Henderson’s two-out grounder allowed Jace Williams to score from third.
Sarah Robinson, who had the only previous hit against Henderson, singled to center to lead off UH’s turn at bat. Kayla Wartner advanced to third and scored the tying run when the throw from center sailed to the backstop.
That brought Iwata to the plate.
"I knew I was going to come up in the order and I just wanted to hit the ball hard and do it for my team," Iwata said.
After working the count to 1-2, Iwata turned on a pitch and sent the near-capacity crowd at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium into a frenzy with her fifth, and most momentous, home run of the season.
"That was crazy," Ricketts said. "The way she hit it out of the park, it’s still hard to believe."
The win came two days after UH, ranked 18th and 19th in this week’s polls, took its first loss of the season against No. 6 Texas. The Wahine (23-1) then spoiled Cal’s perfect run after 23 straight wins to open the season.
"It’s a signature win that really sends a statement," UH head coach Bob Coolen said. "Texas handled us the other night and tonight we strike out 16 times again and they just believed, because we had a pitcher that was just as efficient and just as awesome as their pitcher."
Ricketts, who took the loss against Texas, said that loss actually set the tone for Thursday’s landmark victory.
"The game against Texas didn’t go our way, but I think if we hadn’t had that game we might not have had this result tonight," she said, "because we got all the nerves out and we learned how to be aggressive and not to doubt ourselves in the late innings."
Henderson, who earned a save in the Bears’ 6-3 win over Texas just prior to the matchup with UH, faced just two batters over the minimum through nine innings — she allowed a single to Robinson in the fourth, and Wartner reached on an error in the seventh.
Ricketts’ innings were far more dramatic, but she managed to keep the Bears scoreless while stranding 11 runners on base through seven innings. She escaped a one-out bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth when she struck out cleanup hitter Williams looking and got Breana Kostreba to pop out to second base to preserve the dual shutouts that stretched to the 10th.
"I do tend to tense up when it gets late in the game and I just kept telling myself I’m going to be fine," said Ricketts, who stranded 17 Cal runners on base for the game. "I have quotes written on the glove and I kept looking down and telling myself I’m going to be fine."
UH’s run of ranked opponents in the tournament continues today when the Wahine face No. 21/22 Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m.
