Truck fire closes Likelike tunnel; man found outside tunnel in critical condition
A man in his 60s was in extremely critical condition Thursday outside one of the Likelike Highway tunnels that was closed due to a pickup truck fire.
Police reported the fire in the Wilson Tunnel about 2:45 p.m., and officers rerouted traffic to the H-3 freeway from Kaneohe. The lanes were reopened about an hour and a half later.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Terry Seelig said the pickup truck caught fire in the tunnel and the occupants got out safely.
About the same time, bystanders found a man laying in the grass, and firefighters performed CPR, he said. An Emergency Medical Services supervisor said paramedics took the man to a hospital in extremely critical condition.
Seelig said the fire damaged a 60-foot area of ceiling tiles in the tunnel.
