University grad Kim finishes second
Gonzaga freshman Alice Kim, a University High graduate, came up a shot short in Wednesday’s final round of the 27th annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. The Rainbow Wahine tournament was played at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
Kim, playing the No. 1 position for the Bulldogs, finished second to Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro, who closed with a 3-over-par 75 for a 54-hole total of 5-over 221. Kim took a triple bogey late in the round after a lost ball and also shot 75. She tied for second at 222 with 36-hole leader Brittany Henderson (78) of Coastal Carolina.
Senior Erika Lundberg led Hawaii with a 13th-place finish at 76—228.
No. 12 Texas A&M won the team title, shooting 298 for a 901 total — four shots better than 24th-ranked UC Davis (297). Gonzaga (308—910) was third and Hawaii (323—940) took 10th in the 14-team tournament.
Hawaii-Hilo finished last at 335—979, led by Dayna Bersamin (84—244).
Fujikawa 10 shots back in North Carolina
Hawaii’s Tadd Fujikawa opened with a 2-over-par 74 and is 10 back after Wednesday’s first round of the eGolf Professional Tour’s Pine Needles Classic. It is being played at Pine Needles Resort in Southern Pines, N.C., and Seven Lakes Country Club in West End, N.C.
Fujikawa is tied for 107th in a field of 182 going into today’s second round. There were 68 players who shot under par Wednesday.
Cal Baptist trips Hawaii-Hilo in baseball
Matt Daugherty, Zach Esquerra and Garrett Trevino all drove in two runs to lead Cal Baptist to a 15-4 baseball victory over Hawaii-Hilo on Wednesday at Wong Stadium.
Cole Bullard went 3-for-4 for the Lancers (21-4, 18-2 Pacific West Conference).
Travis Ogimi and Travis Stancil had two RBIs apiece for the Vulcans (4-17, 1-13).
Wahine coach search committee chosen
The University of Hawaii said it convened a four-member “search advisory committee” Wednesday to begin the screening process for selecting a new head coach for the women’s basketball team.
UH said Gay Satsuma, Al Chee, Marilyn Moniz-Kaho‘ohanohano and Carl Clapp will assist athletic director Jim Donovan in the search for a successor to Dana Takahara-Dias. Takahara-Dias was fired March 7 after three years on the job and a 32-58 record.
Satsuma is the associate director of the Center for Japanese Studies at UH, while Chee is chairman-elect of ‘Ahahui Koa Aneunue, the athletic department booster club, and a Chevron executive.
Moniz-Kaho‘ohanohano and Clapp are associate athletic directors at UH.
Joaquim earns district first-team honor
University of Hawaii center Vander Joaquim has been named to the 2012 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 6 first team, it was announced Wednesday.
Joaquim, who will be a senior in 2012-13, led UH in scoring (14.3 ppg), rebounding (9.5 rpg), field-goal percentage (.560) and blocks (58). He is the first Rainbow Warrior to receive a first-team honor since Michael Kuebler in 2003-04.
