While the weeklong run of thunderstorms and flooding finally abated Sunday, first responders, electrical repair personnel and road crews remained busy attending to a new round of headaches caused by high-gusting tradewinds.
On Kauai, meanwhile, fire crews recovered the body of a hiker who was swept into the ocean near Hanakapiai Stream on Saturday. The woman was identified as Sansan Sheng, 58, of Sunnyvale, Calif.
On Oahu a high-surf advisory for east shores was extended through 6 p.m. today.
A wind advisory in effect for the entire state was also extended for Oahu through 6 p.m.
Winds of up to 30 mph, with possible gusts of 50 mph, left at least 1,400 residences without power Sunday.
In Pearl City a downed power line on Hoolaulea Street left about 700 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers in the dark Sunday morning. Power was restored to all but 130 by 11:15 a.m.
In Kalihi, fallen trees and twisted power lines knocked out electricity to about 600 customers. Crews restored power to the area by noon.
A HECO spokeswoman said a number of smaller weather-related outages occurred in pockets around the island, including the back of Manoa Valley, where about 100 customers lost power around noon.
Also Sunday, a fallen tree at the 2-mile marker above Makiki Heights Drive prompted officials to close Tantalus Drive until road crews could remove it.
Fire officials said four roofs were blown off Sunday.
The strong winds could blow remnants of moisture from last week’s storm over the leeward areas, forecasters said. Isolated showers, especially in windward and mauka areas, are in the forecast, but no thunderstorms are predicted.
After a second day of searching, a Fire Department rescue helicopter retrieved Sheng’s body after a tour boat spotted it Sunday about four miles west of Hanakapiai. The copter brought the body to Princeville Airport around 9 a.m.
The Fire Department, Coast Guard and Civil Air Patrol assisted in the search, which resumed Sunday at first light. Initial reports Saturday said the victim was a man, but county officials said the description of witnesses otherwise matched.
Kauai County said Sheng was scheduled to attend a conference on Kauai and was traveling alone.
