Bicyclists plan ride to nature preserve
Cycling enthusiasts can join "The Great Kalihi Cargo Haul" at 7 a.m. Saturday.
The Kalihi Valley Instructional Bicycle Exchange, better known as KVIBE, is partnering with University of Hawaii nursing students and the Queen’s Medical Center to provide 100 free bicycle helmets to youths. They also are hosting a 2-mile group ride from KVIBE’s warehouse up to the Ho‘oulu ‘Aina Nature Preserve, where participants can learn about the history and culture of the area.
The event marks the launch of KVIBE’s mobile workshop, which will use a 9-foot-long Metrofiets cargo bicycle to offer bicycle education, safety training and repairs in the community.
KVIBE is a nonprofit after-school bicycle program under Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services, which refurbishes bikes for Kalihi youths.
Meet at 7 a.m. at KVIBE’s Warehouse at 1638 Kamehameha IV Road. Parental consent forms are required for participants under age 18. Visit www.k-vibe.blogspot.com for more information.
