‘The Chase’ will be on Sunday
Sunday’s inaugural Hapalua Half Marathon features a race within the race.
Race directors are calling it "The Chase" and are offering $11,000 in prize money. Two-time defending Honolulu Marathon champion Nicholas Chelimo and six-time winner Jimmy Muindi — both professional runners from Kenya — will try to track down 24 of Hawaii’s top runners (12 women and 12 men) from the Duke Kahanamoku start line in Waikiki to the finish line 13.1 miles later at Kapiolani Park.
The women will get an 18-minute head start and the men a 9-minute advantage. The women will go off first at 5:42 a.m., with the men starting 9 minutes later. The Kenyans will go off with the remaining runners taking part in this inaugural event at 6 a.m. The first to cross the finish line will earn $5,000 and most folks figure one of the women will break the tape. About 4,000 runners are expected to take part in this event.
