French drama kicks off Jewish film festival
The 10th annual Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival begins today at 7 p.m. with a free showing of "Sarah’s Key" at Temple Emanu-El. The screening is sponsored by the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
The festival, sponsored by the temple and the Honolulu Museum of Art, includes seven new films from five countries, exploring the rich variety of cultures and peoples who embrace Judaism around the world, an announcement said. The films will be shown March 17 through 29 at the Doris Duke Theatre at the museum.
"Sarah’s Key" is a French film with English subtitles, adapted to the screen from Tatiana de Rosnay’s bestselling novel, starring Kristin Scott Thomas. She plays Julia Jarmond, an American journalist married to a Frenchman, who stumbles upon a family secret involving the former occupants of his home. She resolves to find out what happened to the parents of Sarah, the only member of the Starzynski family to survive.
An opening night reception will be held March 17 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Doris Duke Theatre. Tickets are $15, $12 for museum members. Purchase tickets in advance at HonoluluAcademy.tix.com. For more information or to view movie trailers, visit goo.gl/KCihB.
