Brigham Young-Hawaii senior guard Jet Chang reaffirmed the coaches’ choice as preseason player of the year by being named the Pacific West Conference player of the year in men’s basketball Thursday.
Chang, from Yilan, Taiwan, led the conference in scoring (17.8 ppg) and was fifth in steals (1.6 spg). Earlier this week, Chang was named to the first team of the Daktronics All-West Region squad, the only PacWest player so honored. The All-American was named the most outstanding player of the 2011 NCAA Division II Elite Eight, leading the Seasiders to a second-place national finish.
Chaminade senior post Matt Cousins also was selected to the seven-member PacWest first team.
Chaminade guard Lee Bailey shared co-freshman of the year honors with Grand Canyon’s Jerome Garrison.
Dixie State’s Jon Judkins was named coach of the year for the fourth consecutive season.
Named to the second team from Hawaii schools were BYUH junior guard Junior Ale and sophomore forward Bracken Funk.
Hawaii-Hilo junior swingman Terrell Mack and senior forward Zachary Wilde earned honorable mention, as did Hawaii Pacific senior forward Fran Urli.
