Brigham Young-Hawaii junior forward Shayla Washington was named the Pacific West Conference newcomer of the year and teammate Taylor Mann freshman of the year in women’s basketball Thursday.
Washington, a transfer from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College, broke the program’s single-game scoring record when she had 44 points against Hawaii Pacific earlier this month. She led the conference in scoring (18.8 ppg), was fourth in rebounding (8.5 rpg) and also was named to the first team of the Daktronics All-West Regional squad earlier this week.
Joining Washington on the first team were Hawaii Pacific senior forward Mana Hopkins — the third first-team selection for the Konawaena graduate — and her Sea Warriors teammate Paris Gravely, a senior guard. Hawaii-Hilo senior Hillary Hurley earned her second straight first-team honor. She also was a first-team selection in volleyball.
There were no second-team selections from Hawaii, but Hawaii schools picked up four of the five honorable mentions: Chaminade junior guard Diane Zane (Roosevelt) and sophomore guard Jordan Ahakuelo (Pearl City); Hawaii-Hilo junior guard Kirsten Shimizu; and Hawaii Pacific senior guard Taiyande Huskey.
