Power back on in Hawaii Kai after utility pole falls over highway

BARRY MARKOWITZ / SPECIAL TO THE STAR-ADVERTISER
A vehicle impacted a pole on Kalanianaole Hwy near the Koko Marina Shopping Center, causing concern by emergency officials that it could create a domino effect bringing down other poles.

Hawaiian Electric Co. crews restored power to the last seven customers affected by a power outage caused by a traffic accident that downed a utility pole and bloced Kalananaole Highway at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Crews fixed the pole and restored power to all customers as of about 3:50 a.m., a spokesman for the utility said.

About 300 customers in Hawaii Kai lost power after the crash, which left the pole leaning precariously against a wall.

Police detoured traffic onto Keahole Street, police said.

East Oahu commuters saw traffic back up to McCully because of the highway closure.

Koko Marina Shopping Center was among 33 HECO customers that got power restored about 6 p.m., HECO spokesman Darren Pai said.

Meanwhile, about 260 customers got their power back about 4:45 p.m., Pai said.
