A tiny post office on a remote Molokai peninsula that’s accessible only by plane or mule has been spared from the U.S. Postal Service’s list of possible closures.

The one-woman Kalaupapa office that serves less than 100 residents was on a list of thousands of locations nationwide that are being considered for closure. Residents of the former Hansen’s Disease settlement were worried losing the post office would cut them off from communication in an area that has no Internet or cell phone access.

USPS spokesman Duke Gonzales said Friday the postal service recognizes the office is a “lifeline” for Kalaupapa.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka and U.S. Rep Mazie Hirono say they are relieved to hear the office won’t close.

Two offices on Oahu and one on Kauai remain on the list.
