A 36-year-old Waimanalo man died at the scene of a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Ward Avenue early this morning, the latest in a rash of motorcycle fatalities on Oahu in recent weeks.

Police said David M. Keaweehu III was riding a white 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle, and ran a red light while heading east on Kapiolani Boulevard at about 12:30 a.m. 

Keaweehu tried to stop, but skidded into the rear door of a gray 1995 Toyota Avalon sedan. The Avalon then struck a white 2004 Toyota Sienna van headed mauka on Ward Avenue, police said.

Police said speed may be a factor in the crash. Keaweehu was not wearing a helmet. It’s not known if alcohol or drugs were factors.

The drivers and passengers in the van and sedan were not injured, police said.

There have been 13 fatalities this year compared to nine at the same time last year. This is the fifth fatal motorcycle crash on Oahu since Jan. 1.

A 51-year-old Aiea man died Feb. 19 when his 1994 Suzuki Intruder motorcycle veered into the path of a 2003 Lincoln Navigator on the H-1 Freeway just past the Palama Street off-ramp. He was not wearing a helmet.

A 27-year-old Japanese visitor on her honeymoon was killed on Feb. 17 and her husband was critically injured when their rented Harley Davidson motorcycle hit a guard rail on Kamehameha Highway near the Crouching Lion in Kaaawa. They were not wearing helmets. 

On Feb. 1, 47-year-old George Simao Jr., of Aiea died when he lost control of his 2005 Kawasaki while driving north on Bougainville Drive and veered into oncoming traffic. Simao was wearing a helmet, but still suffered massive head and internal injuries.

Another motorcycle crash on Jan. 5 killed a 27-year-old Army Sgt. Aaron Bennett. Witnesses told police Bennett, a Schofield Barracks soldier who served in Iraq, was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic on Fort Weaver Road before the 5:30 a.m. crash. He was wearing a helmet. It was the first traffic fatality of 2012 on Oahu.

In addition, a motorcycle accident on Tuesday sent a 43-year-old Aiea man to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition when his  blue 2001 Yamaha R-1 motorcycle crashed into a black 2001 Volkswagen Golf sedan making a U-turn on Kaonohi Street near Hilo Place. The victim was thrown from the motorcycle, and suffered head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

There have also been two fatal motorcycle crashes on the neighbor islands this year.

A motorcycle crash on Hawaii island killed Dimitri I. Sheehan, 24, of Lapahoehoe on Feb. 25. Hawaii County police said Sheehan was speeding and traveling toward Hilo on Kalanianaole Street near Leileiwi Beach Park shortly after 4 p.m. when he did a "wheelie" on his 2002 Honda motorcycle and lost control of the motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet.

On Maui, 21-year-old Wayan DeCosta of Honokowai, died on Jan. 24 when his 2001 Yamaha motorcycle crashed into a parked pickup truck. DeCosta was not wearing a helmet.
