As APEC approaches, the heat is on

It’s getting closer. In preparation for the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November, organizers are beginning to provide more details of how the meeting will affect us on the ground, sea and air.

Costs include repaving roads, renovating public facilities, replanting median strips and installing security cameras. Now some of the security details are emerging: no surfers off parts of Waikiki, no boats in certain parts of Ala Wai Boat Harbor and no private aircraft allowed over Oahu. Portions of some parks, including Ala Moana and Kapiolani, may be closed off as well.

But it’s only for a week. Let’s hope things go smoothly.

It depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is

U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye is not calling his "likes" for U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono in her race for the U.S. Senate an endorsement, but his attendance at a fundraiser for her in Washington, D.C., had all the appearances of support.

Hirono is facing former Rep. Ed Case in the Democratic primary to replace retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka in 2012. However, Inouye has said he remains "hurt" by Case challenging Akaka for the Senate office five years ago.

Case said Inouye had promised he would not endorse anyone in the primary, but semantics clearly are at play.
