2 Hawaii boxers eliminated at nationals

Hawaii’s Danson Bellez and Arnold Dinong were eliminated during their respective 141-pound preliminary bouts at the USA Boxing national championships at Fort Carson, Colo.

Dinong of Ewa Beach lost a 22-11 decision to De Lorien Caraway of St. Paul, Minn., while Mountain View’s Bellez lost to Detroit’s Ronnie Austion by an 18-5 decision. The winners of each weight class advance as U.S. representatives to the Americas Olympic Qualifier in May in Brazil, the last qualifier for the Summer Games in London.

Two female boxers from Hawaii begin their quest today for spots on the U.S. team at the Women’s World Championships later this year in China. Haley Pasion opens defense of her 119-pound national title, while Lisa Ha looks to improve her third-place finish at 106 pounds from last year.

BYUH ranked at top of Division II

Brigham Young-Hawaii is the No. 1 team in the nation in Division II women’s tennis, according to the Interscholastic Tennis Association rankings released Wednesday.

Hawaii Pacific is No. 5.

BYUH’s Annie Hwang is the No. 1 ranked singles player, while teammates Sherry Liu and Yuan Jia are Nos. 4 and 7. Hawaii Pacific’s Zora Vickova is No. 8.

Hwang and Liu are the top-ranked doubles team.

Hawaii Pacific is No. 21 in the men’s rankings, while BYUH is No. 26.

Pilares guest coach at speed clinic

Former University of Hawaii star receiver Kealoha Pilares will be a guest coach at the Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinic for boys and girls on Sunday at Mililani High School.

Pilares just finished his rookie season with the Carolina Panthers of the NFL.

Registration is at 7:30 with the clinic from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Clinic dates are every Sunday until August.

Eddie Aikau contest holding period ends

The three-month holding period for the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big-wave contest ended on Wednesday.

The contest does not run without 20-foot-plus waves at Waimea Bay and waves of that size did not reach Oahu’s North Shore this winter.

The event was last held in December 2009, and it was won by California’s Greg Long.
