Honolulu firefighters contained a three-acre brush fire behind the Kalaheo High School football field that may be linked to a power line in the area.

The fire was first reported about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday on a hillside near the Kaneohe side of the field. The steep grade of the hill made battling the blaze difficult, but Honolulu Fire Department personnel from five companies were able to stem the spread of the fire along its multiple fronts by 8:40 p.m.

While the fire was visible from miles away, no injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig confirmed that a Hawaiian Electric Co. power line was down in the area but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman said most of Kailua and Aikahi lost electricity. Power was restored to all but 10 customers by 11:30 p.m.

Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Darren Pai said power to those customers near Kapaa Quarry should be restored this afternoon. He said crews couldn’t reach a damaged equipment on a hillside until daylight today.

The cause of the outage remains under investigation.
