Marching bands will wow
Can’t walk and chew gum at the same time? Then you’ll be impressed with the performers at the Ninth Annual Menehune Classic Marching Band Festival featuring bands from several Oahu high schools Oct. 15.
More than 1,000 students will showcase their precision marching and maneuvering, percussion skills, drum majoring talents and color guard at the festival, to take place at the Moanalua High School stadium.
Participating high schools are Moanalua, Aiea, Farrington, Kamehameha, Kapolei, Iolani, Mililani, Pearl City, Kalani, Leilehua and Radford.
Tickets are $3 to $7 and will be available at the door. The music starts at 6 p.m. Moanalua High School is at 2825 Ala Ilima St. Call 447-8255.
Enter your spookiest story
The deadline is fast approaching for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s annual Halloween Fiction Contest. Entries are limited to 750 words and must be original work never before published. The winner will receive a $200 cash prize, and the story will appear in the Today section on Oct. 30. The second-place story will win $100. The contest is open to Hawaii residents; Oahu Publications contributors, employees and their family members are not eligible.
The deadline for entries is Sunday.

Wong shares ‘Blue Tomato’ secrets
Chef Alan Wong will discuss culinary principles from his cookbook “The Blue Tomato” and demonstrate techniques utilized in his recipes at a book-signing event from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Williams-Sonoma at Ala Moana Center.

Cooking class explores aging
International macrobiotic counselor, educator and cook Warren Kramer will offer lectures and cooking classes Oct. 13 to 16 at the Church of the Crossroads.
