Chaminade men upset Dixie State
Lee Bailey hit the go-ahead shot in the lane with 2 seconds remaining and Rickey Clayborn scored 24 points as Chaminade beat Dixie State 73-71 in a PacWest men’s basketball game Saturday in St. George, Utah.
Bailey finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Chaminade (10-13, 8-8).
McKay Massey scored 14 points for Dixie State (20-5, 15-2), this season’s PacWest regular-season champion.
» Junior Ale hit six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points, and Jake Dastrup made four 3-pointers and had 19 points as Brigham Young-Hawaii (15-10) beat Cal Baptist (16-7, 10-6) 82-76 in a PacWest men’s basketball game Saturday in Riverside, Calif.
Jet Chang added 13 points and Bracken Funk had 11 for the Seasiders (15-10, 12-4), who finished 29-for-48 from the field, including 14-for-23 from 3-point range.

Hurley powers UH-Hilo women to victory
Hillary Hurley had 28 points and 14 rebounds, and Hawaii-Hilo rallied past Dominican 52-42 in a PacWest women’s basketball game Saturday in San Rafael, Calif.
The Vulcans (13-11, 10-8) outscored the Penguins (4-23, 3-14) 32-19 in the second half.
» Mana Hopkins had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Taiyande Huskey had 10 points and 10 rebounds as Hawaii Pacific (15-10, 9-6) routed Notre Dame de Namur (4-22, 3-13) 78-44 in a PacWest women’s basketball game Saturday in Belmont, Calif.
Melody Ladrido added 14 points, and Susannah Walmsley and Paris Gravely each contributed 13 for the Sea Warriors.

UH’s Apine wins WAC indoor triple jump
University of Hawaii senior Madara Apine won the triple jump on the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday in Nampa, Idaho.
Apine, of Ikskile, Latvia, leaped 41 feet, 5 inches to win UH’s first gold medal in the event at the WAC indoor championships. She also broke her own school record set earlier this season.
UH senior TeRina Keenan won the bronze in the shot put Saturday with a throw of 50-9.25.
Hawaii finished the meet with four medals and was seventh with 67 points. Utah State won with 144 points.
Florence, Patacchia win first-round heats
Hawaii surfers John John Florence and Fredrick Patacchia won their first-round heats Saturday at the Quiksilver Pro World Championship Tour event at Snapper Rocks on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Florence, who is in his first full year on the world tour, put up a near-perfect 19.60 score, topping Florida’s Damien Hobgood and Portugal’s Tiago Pires. Patacchia’s score of 15.43 was tops in a heat that included Taj Burrow of Australia and Brett Simpson of California.
In the women’s event, Hawaii’s Coco Ho lost her second-round heat to Sarah Mason of New Zealand.
No. 6 Wahine tumble twice in water polo
The No. 6-ranked University of Hawaii women’s water polo team dropped matches to No. 12 Michigan and No. 17 Cal State Northridge at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday in Irvine, Calif.
Kiki Golden and Lauren Thatcher each scored three goals in Michigan’s 9-8 victory over Hawaii (2-6). Heidi Pettinger scored three goals and Kelcie Ferriera added two in Cal State Northridge’s 9-7 victory over Hawaii.
Hawaii women third in WAC swimming
The University of Hawaii women’s swimming and diving team finished third at the Western Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday in San Antonio.
Hawaii freshman Jasmine Alkhadi placed third in the 100 freestyle in 50.19, while senior Christa Prior finished second in the "B" final of the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:56.91.
San Jose State won the eight-team event with 728 points.
HPU baseball sweeps Grand Canyon
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team swept a PacWest doubleheader from Grand Canyon — 2-1 and 2-1 — on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
In the seven-inning first game, John Albert pitched a seven-hitter with no walks and three strikeouts. In the nine-inning second game, Derek Nakasato had a game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
HPU is 10-0 and 7-0, Grand Canyon 4-11 and 2-9.
Takahara-Dias, Nagamine at QB Club
University of Hawaii women’s basketball coach Dana Takahara-Dias and women’s soccer coach Michele Nagamine will be the featured speakers at Monday’s weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Maple Garden Restaurant.
The Maple Garden Restaurant is located at 909 Isenberg St., directly across from Old Stadium Park. The public is welcomed and lunch is $15. The lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon.
