Hawaii public schools to add surfing as prep sport in ’13

Hawaii pubic high schools will offer competition in surfing as a statewide sport in the spring of 2013, Gov. Neil Abercrombie and education officials announced in a beach side press conference at Waikiki today.

Board of Education member Keith Amemiya said the projected cost for the first year was $150,000 and said the entire expense will be underwritten by donations and sponsorships. He said $50,000 has already been pledged by a surf apparel company he declined to name.

Amemiya said team and individual championships will be offered in boys and girls divisions.

A plan to implement the sport is scheduled to be discussed at the board’s meeting Tuesday.

Hawaii has 45 public high schools offering 44 championships in 19 sports.
