BYU-Hawaii sweeps tennis singles titles
BYU-Hawaii’s Zevhan Zakharov and Annie Hwang captured the USTA/ITA men’s and women’s West Regional Tennis Tournament titles Saturday in Los Angeles.
Zakharov defeated Max Jigante of UC San Diego 6-2, 6-4 in the final, while Hwang won when teammate Sherry Liu defaulted.
Zakharov and C.J. Adamson lost 8-4 in the doubles final to Ahmed Saleem and Bastien Tonus of Grand Canyon.
Hwang and Liu teamed to win the doubles title with an 8-0 victory over Grand Canyon’s Frederique Van de Velde and Mittag.
Zakharov, Hwang and Liu advance to the ITA Small College Championships, which begin Oct. 13 in Mobile, Ala.
BYUH topples HPU in soccer showdown
Senior Natalie Drewery scored in the 28th minute and freshman Rylei North added two second-half goals as Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Hawaii Pacific 3-0 Saturday at Atherton Field in Kaneohe.
The Seasiders improved to 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the PacWest. The Sea Warriors slipped to 6-2-1 and 4-1-1.
BYU-Hawaii sophomore goalie Megan McCain had a season-high eight saves in posting her fourth shutout.
» Marina Nesic had three goals to lead Grand Canyon (4-4-2, 3-1-1) over host Hawaii-Hilo (2-4-1, 0-3-1).
» Academy of Art (1-3, 3-5) scored three goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half for a 4-1 victory over Chaminade (1-8, 1-4) in San Francisco. Freshman Alyssa Nagai scored for the Silverswords.
Hawaii Pacific blanks BYU-Hawaii
Chance Bukowski and Truls Lystad scored two goals each Saturday as the Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team shut down BYU-Hawaii, 5-0 in Laie.
HPU moved to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in conference. BYU-Hawaii is 5-1-1 and 1-1-1.
» Saeed Robinson scored three goals to power visiting Grand Canyon (6-2-1, 3-1-1) to a 9-0 victory over HawaII-Hilo (2-5-1, 1-3).
» Patrick Heinemann scored 3 minutes into the match as Academy of Art (2-6, 1-3) defeated Chaminade 3-0 Saturday in San Francisco. The Silverswords fell to 0-9-1 and 0-5.
BYUH sweeps Grand Canyon in volleyball
Freshman Stella Chen had 21 kills, 16 digs, four assists and two aces as BYU-Hawaii completed a two-match sweep of Grand Canyon on Saturday in Phoenix.
The Seasiders won 25-13, 18-25, 25-17, 25-17 to improve to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the PacWest. The Antelopes fell to 8-6 and 2-4.
