Yes, this foolishness will never end
Entire books have been written about wacky, frivolous or time-wasting laws that have been approved by legislative bodies at all levels of government in America, including in Hawaii. Unfortunately, this sad situation shows no sign of abating.
Dubious bills being considered at the Hawaii Legislature this year include one that would designate an official state microbe. Yes, an official state microbe.
Another wants to require airport vendors to sell bottled water at no more than the average price of bottled water in the county in which the airport is located. It seems somebody got upset when they went to buy bottled water at the airport.
Such bills are tolerated because, apparently, no legislator wants to impugn the integrity or intelligence of peers. But, really, an official state microbe?
Not everyone is always thinking of us
As the Aloha State puffs out its chest to enjoy the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Academy Awards, "The Descendents," the isle-based film nominated for best picture, awaits its fate in Sunday’s awards show.
In an interview with director Alexander Payne that aired Friday on KHPR, National Public Radio’s Susan Stamberg asked about that last scene, the one with George Clooney watching TV with his daughters.
"Let me think," Payne said. "This is the Hawaii one, right?"
Stamberg seemed startled. "What did you just say?" she asked.
Payne chuckled. "I finished it last March, so … "
"Yes, it’s the Hawaiian one," the reporter shot back.
And here we all thought we were so special. Maybe Mr. Payne’s just not that into you, Hawaii.
