Steve Veriato and Nick Mason are back in Hilo this week for the 15th annual Hilo Invitational. The Pro-Am is Friday and the 36-hole tournament is Saturday and Sunday at Hilo Muni.
Stephen Zane won last year by a shot over Mason and amateur Neil Cabico.
Mason, a Leilehua graduate, played for Hawaii-Hilo before turning pro. He has won this tournament three times and is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Hawaii Pearl Open.
Veriato, 65, grew up in Hilo and played on the PGA and Champions tours. He is playing in the senior professional flight that includes Dave Eichelberger, Casey Nakama, Dan Nishimoto, Dean Prince, Larry Stubblefield and Lance Taketa.
The pro flight also includes Jarett Hamamoto, Kevin Hayashi, Kevin Carll, Jacob Low and Sean Maekawa.
Wahine finish last
Hawaii finished last at last weekend’s 12-team Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford, with Kaili Britos’ 39th-place finish the best for the Rainbow Wahine. A few other golfers from Hawaii had more success.
Cal won with a two-day score of 19-over-par 587, followed by Stanford (606) and ninth-ranked Washington (607). The Huskies got a 13th-place finish from freshman Cyd Okino, whose 78—151 was six back of medalist Emily Childs.
Michelle Condry, Okino’s teammate last year at Punahou, tied for fifth at 73—148. She is a freshman at San Francisco. Hilo’s Britney Yada (77—160), a juniorat Portland State and the reigning Big Sky champion, shared 39th with Britos (82—160).
Wahine Megan Inouye (77—165) tied for 50th.
