A veteran police sergeant arrested early Saturday after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with a car in lower Makiki went on paid leave Tuesday, the Honolulu Police Department said this morning.

Information provided by police Tuesday stating that Sgt. Andrew Tsukano remained on the job pending an investigation by the Traffic Division was incorrect, police spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter said. He was scheduled to be off through the three-day weekend and technically could not be put on leave until Tuesday, she said.

Tsukano, 57, was traveling west on South Beretania Street just before Victoria Street when his car struck a man crossing Beretania Street. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital in serious condition about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Tsukano refused to submit to a sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of felony negligent injury, driving while under the influence of an intoxicant, and refusing to submit to a breath, blood or urine test. He was released pending investigation.

Tsukano, a 31-year HPD veteran, was off-duty at the time of the crash. He is a patrol sergeant in District 7, the East Honolulu district.

The case is currently being investigated by the Traffic Division and an administrative investigation is pending.

The process has begun to restrict Tsukano’s police duties and when he returns to work, he will be placed on desk duty, Sluyter said.
