Maui school’s band to play Carnegie Hall in April 2013
Students from a Maui private school will play music at Carnegie Hall in New York next year.
St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School’s symphonic band has been invited to perform in the National Band and Orchestra Festival in April 2013.
Band Director Everett Yamashita told The Maui News he hasn’t finalized the playlist. But he expects the orchestra will play First Suite in E flat by Gustav Holst among other selections.
The performance will be a big step for the band, which had so few students it didn’t have a percussion section just a few years ago.
Around 45 students along with teachers and chaperones will travel to New York.
Students and faculty have started fundraising already — Yamashita estimates they’ll need to raise about $125,000.
