Octoberfest Street Festival is free
Beer and Bavarian cuisine are in the spotlight at Friday’s Octoberfest Street Festival in the Chinatown arts district on Nuuanu Avenue and Hotel Street.
The festival, running from 6 to 10 p.m., is free, but beverages such as Samuel Adams Boston Lager and the Marzen-style Octoberfest beer will be sold.
Bavarian foods will include bockwurst, bratwurst, fresh pretzels, potato salad and sauerkraut. Restaurants JJ Dolan’s, Brasserie Du Vin, Murphy’s, Soul de Cuba, Tea @ 1024 and Not Just Desserts will offer their own dishes, as will vendors Shogunai Tacos, El Yaqui and Mama’s Soul Kitchen.

Curry contest open to amateur chefs
If you’ve got the secret to a great curry, enter your recipe in Kahala Hotel & Resort’s "All in the Family Curry Contest."

The contest is open only to amateur chefs. The winner will receive a prize package, and winning curry recipes will be featured at the hotel’s Wednesday curry buffet at the Plumeria Beach House.

Neighbor island festivals woo foodies

» Coconut Festival cooking contest: Saturday and Sunday at Kapaa Beach Park on Kauai. Enter a dish in the first-course or dessert categories, making sure coconut is an ingredient. First prize is $100. For applications: kbakauai.org.
The festival runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
» 13th Annual Taste of Hilo: 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 16 at Sangha Hall. The event, a benefit for Hawaii Community College, spotlights range-fed beef prepared by Beth Ann Nishijima of Nori’s. It will also feature more than 35 restaurants, chefs, pastry chefs, bakers and beverage suppliers.

Win $200 in contest for spooky yarns
Spin your most haunting tale of horror and the supernatural in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s annual Halloween Fiction Contest. Entries are limited to 750 words and must be original work never before published. The winner will receive a $200 cash prize, and the story will appear in the Today section on Oct. 30. The writer of the second-place story will be awarded $100. The contest is open to Hawaii residents; Oahu Publications contributors, employees and their family members are not eligible. The deadline for entries is Oct. 9.
