More than 28,000 participate in annual Great Aloha Run

More than 28,000 runners and walkers made their way under partly cloudy skies from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium in the annual Great Aloha Run.
The 8.15 mile course started in Downtown Honolulu, continued down Nimitz Highway past Honolulu Harbor, Kamehameha Highway and into Aloha Stadium to the finish line at the north end zone.
Several roads, including parts of Nimitz Highway, Kamehameha Highway and Salt Lake Boulevard, were closed for the run. Downtown streets reopened at about 8 a.m. and other streets reopened after the runners passed.
The annual race and fun run began 28 years ago and includes military runners in formation and occasional runners in costume.
First place finishers in the elite division get $1,000.

Each year, the race also raises thousands of dollars for local charities.
