Fisherman found dead offshore
A fisherman was found dead Sunday morning in waters off Anahola, Kauai, the county said in a news release.
An off-duty lifeguard spotted what appeared to be a lifeless body in waters approximately 300 yards off of South Aliomanu Road at around 9:45 a.m.
The 57-year-old Lihue man, identified as Brian Horikami, was brought to shore by Jet Ski and was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.
Police investigators found the man’s truck parked in the area. An interview with the victim’s girlfriend revealed he was fishing near Aliomanu Sunday morning but was late in returning home.
An autopsy has been requested to determine the cause of death.
Drowning victim identified
The Honolulu medical examiner’s office identified a 47-year-old man who apparently drowned while canoeing off Waikiki as Eugene Diamond of Honolulu.
Police said Diamond was found unresponsive in the water by a passing catamaran at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday after his canoe flipped over. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. An autopsy will be done Monday. Police said foul play is not suspected.
Man nearly dies in pool
A 69-year-old man was in critical condition Saturday after nearly drowning at a swimming pool in the Ala Moana area.
Paramedics were dispatched at about 9:25 a.m. and took the man to the hospital, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
North Shore brush fire put out
Firefighters put out a small brush fire caused by a burning vehicle on Saturday near Kaena Point.
About a dozen firefighters responded to the fire about two miles past the end of Farrington Highway on the North Shore, said Honolulu fire Capt. Gary Lum.
Firefighters were hampered by the remoteness of the fire and transported water by tankers to the scene. The small brush fire was extinguished by 1 p.m., about an hour and 15 minutes after the original call.
Police said the vehicle was determined to be stolen and suspect the vehicle was intentionally set afire.
Man dies when tree falls on him
A 71-year-old Kailua man died Thursday after the coconut tree he was trimming fell on him in Kailua.
Fifita Misi died of internal bleeding in the chest after he was crushed by the tree, the Honolulu medical examiner’s office said.
Police said Misi, who owned a tree-trimming business, had been hired to trim some coconut trees at a home.
While he was at the top of a full-grown tree at about 10:40 a.m., the roots became dislodged and the tree toppled. Misi died at the hospital.
Home damaged by cooking fire
A cooking fire caused $6,000 in damage Saturday at a Pearl City home, a fire official said.
The fire started at about 11:30 a.m. when someone left a pot of food on the stove that later burst into flames, said Honolulu fire Capt. Gary Lum.
Firefighters brought the Waimano Home Road fire under control in about five minutes. No one was hurt.
Security photo leads to arrest
Observant Honolulu police officers arrested an alleged robber Saturday after recognizing him in a surveillance photo taken at the scene in Ala Moana.
James Bordenave, 32, of no local address, was charged Sunday with first-degree robbery and was being held on $40,000 bail.
A security guard saw a man take items at about 5:20 p.m. Friday and tried to stop him outside the store, police said. The robber allegedly brandished a weapon and fled with the merchandise.
Patrol officers recognized the robber in a surveillance photo, and officers found him at a park at 7:20 a.m. Saturday. The security officer identified Bordenave as the assailant.
Suspect arrested in threats
A 29-year-old Wahiawa man was arrested Saturday night after allegedly threatening another man with a firearm.
The victim, a 19-year-old man, told police that during an argument before midnight in Wahiawa, the other man brandished a gun and threatened him, police said.
Officers arrested the older man on Olive Avenue for investigation of terroristic threatening and three gun offenses.
