Appleby earns paddleboard victory
Honolulu’s Candice Appleby won the women’s division of Sunday’s fourth Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle 10-mile stand-up paddleboard race at Dana Point, Calif.
Appleby, 43rd place overall, finished in 1 hour, 30 minutes and 11 seconds. California’s Danny Ching won the overall title in 1:17.
In the team relay, C4 Waterman, with two Hawaii members, bested a record 43 other four-person teams. C4 Waterman members were Hawaii’s Noa Ginella and Mariko Strickland, and Travis Grant of Australia and Georges Cronsteadts of Tahiti.
Three Hawaii paddlers were among the top five in the kid’s race, with Mo Freitas winning the event. Christopher Bluthardt was second and Vanina Walsh third.
