Baxter takes SUP title in California
Maui’s Connor Baxter won his first major stand-up paddle championship Saturday, claiming the Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle in Dana Point, Calif.
The 17-year-old Baxter fought off 10-time world prone paddleboard champion Jamie Mitchell of Australia and defending event champion Danny Ching of California.
The women’s elite race was won by Honolulu resident Candice Appleby for the fourth consecutive year.
Baxter finished in a time of 43 minutes, 52 seconds; Mitchell in 43:55; Ching in 44:00.
Appleby finished in 49:44. Brandi Baksic of California was second (50:12).
Grand Canyon upends Chaminade in soccer
Grand Canyon rallied from an early one-goal deficit to beat Chaminade 3-1 on Saturday in Pacific West Conference men’s soccer at the Saint Louis School field.
Yared Solscheid, Saeed Robinson and Nick Sykes scored for the Antelopes (4-2, 1-1).
Max Gerwalt, a freshman from Germany, scored for the Silverswords (0-6-1, 0-3).

Cheyenne Hayden and Marina Nesic scored two goals apiece to lead the Antelopes (3-3-1, 2-0).
Freshman Shannon Wright scored twice in the second half for the Silverswords (1-5, 1-1).
Malley, Krout take BYUH races
Hawaii Pacific’s Dany Malley ran to a first-place finish in the BYU-Hawaii Invitational men’s cross-country race Saturday.
Malley finished the 8-kilometer course in Laie in 26 minutes, 44 seconds.
Spencer Deavila (26:58), Matt Belliston (27:00) and Nick Jones (27:04) finished in second through fourth places to lead host BYUH to the team victory.
HPU finished second in the team standings, followed by Chaminade in third.
Lacey Krout won the women’s 5K race in 18:45, leading the Seasiders to the team win.
Katie Buxton (18:59) of BYUH placed second, followed by Hawaii Pacific’s Kim Kuhnert (19:13) in third.
In the women’s team standings, HPU took second place, followed by the University of Hawaii in third, Hawaii-Hilo in fourth and Chaminade in fifth.
