East-West Center displays Dunham’s work
President Barack Obama’s mother and her work will be the subject of a new exhibition at Hawaii’s East-West Center.
The Honolulu-based institution today will begin displaying numerous photographs and art from Stanley Ann Dunham’s field work in Indonesia.
Dunham, who died in 1995, was a center research fellow. The exhibition includes pictures taken by Dunham and artifacts from her own collection.
The East-West Center promotes cultural and technical interchanges between the United States and other nations in the Pacific, as well as providing scholarships for students from the Pacific region to study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Her daughter — and Obama’s half-sister — Maya Soetoro-Ng will attend an opening reception for the exhibition Oct. 2.

Meeting set on plan to build green community
A presentation on the development of 75 acres in Eleele as Kauai County’s first green, sustainable and affordable community will be made on Wednesday by the Housing Agency and the project’s consultant, Kimura International.
The meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hanapepe public library.
Lima Ola is one of 38 projects that are part of Mayor Bernard Carvalho’s Holo Holo 2020 vision.
"It’s the county’s first foray into developing an integrated community utilizing green and sustainable practices and at the same time, it will also be affordable for residents that meet the income criteria," the mayor said in a statement.
Other components being considered for Lima Ola include solar orientation, community gardens, connectivity and safe routes to school, as well as ecological engineering to reduce and recapture runoff.
