The Historic County Building on Kauai has reopened after a $4.8 million, 16-month restoration project.

Workers installed new plumbing and wiring to accommodate modern technology, repainted the inside and outside of the building, installed casement windows and restored the original flooring.

Built in 1913, the structure was the first county building in the Territory of Hawaii. Today it is the oldest continuously used county building in the state.

The building was placed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places in 1981.

Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and other county officials attended a blessing on Wednesday to mark the reopening.
