The state Reapportionment Commission today presented it’s final proposal for new political districts to reflect population changes since the last U.S. census.

The maps, to be voted on Monday, are largely the same as the proposals that went out for public hearings since late August.

Some changes were made on Oahu to reflect the commission’s decision Monday to extract from the state’s population base a limited number of nonresident military members, dependents and non resident students.

The commission faces a potential lawsuit from critics on the neighbor islands who argue that more military members an students should be taken out of the count to more accurately reflect population growth that normally would result in the Big Island gaining a seat in the state Senate. Oahu would lose one of its 18 seats.

Attorneys representing Sen. Malama Solomon and members of the Hawaii County Committee of the state Democratic Party have said they would sue if the final proposal did not result in a new Senate seat on the Big Island.
